The primary purpose of the disability Resource Center is to provide a variety of FREE services to people with disabilities, as well as those who support them, that will lead them to resources and assistance in order to maintain their independence or achieve more independence.
dRC serves people with disabilities living in the Cape Fear Region which includes the counties of New Hanover, Pender, Onslow, Columbus, and Brunswick. Knowing the transportation issues that many people with disabilities face, dRC will gladly provide consultations over the phone, in the home, or at our office.
The list of services dRC provides is extensive. For this reason, the following is a generalized list of some of the most frequently provided services we offer:

  • Information, resources, and referrals to services and supports in the Cape Fear region.
  • Information, resources, and referrals for affordable and accessible housing, including advocacy for individuals being mistreated by landlords or being denied accommodations, and education in signing a lease.
  • Financial assistance and help to individuals who have no home or are living in institutions to move back into the community of their choice.
  • Assistance in filing or appealing disability benefit claims.
  • Preparation for life after high school, including training in budgeting, self-advocacy, and asking for accommodations at work.
  • One-on-one training and support to individuals who are newly diagnosed with a disability and who must learn to live life differently.
  • Linking people with disabilities to social, recreational, and support groups and activities based on their interests.
  • Disability etiquette training.
  • Disability rights training and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Recommendations for assistive technology and work accommodations.
  • Improving job marketability and job searching skills.
  • Providing on-site accessibility surveys and recommendations for barrier removal.
  • Customized training for businesses, nonprofits, and church groups on a variety of disability-related topics.
  • Providing one-on-one emotional peer support in a safe, comforting, and attentive environment for times of distress and hopelessness.
  • Explaining to parents and students the IEP process, how it is supposed to work, and self-advocacy during the IEP meeting.
  • Providing a wide variety of classes intended to help individuals achieve greater independence, including budgeting, credit report repair especially relative to medical bills and financial setbacks, affording to buy a home while on disability, and using coupons to maximize savings on food expenses.
